Biography of Dr. Wayne Dyer

Wayne Walter Dyer was an American self-help author and motivational speaker. He completed his Ed. D. at Wayne State University in 1970. Early in his career, he worked as a high school guidance counselor, and went on to run a successful private practice as a clinical therapist(Wikipedia).

Dr. Wayne Dyers Orange Analogy

“When you squeeze an orange, you’ll always get orange juice to come out. What comes out is what’s inside. The same logic applies to you: when someone squeezes you, puts pressure on you, or says something unflattering or critical, and out of you comes anger, hatred, bitterness, tension, or anxiety, that is what’s inside. If love and joy are what you want to give and receive, change your life by changing what’s inside.” As Cassi always reminds us, we have to “Change our Script.”

Why the Insides Matter

Dr. Dyer was preparing to speak at one of his “I Can Do It” conferences and decided to bring an orange on stage to use as a prop during his lectures. He opened a conversation with a bright, young 12-year-old boy who was sitting in the front row. We’ll call him Corey (to conceal his identity).

Dr. Dyer: “If I were to squeeze this orange as hard as I could, what would come out?” He asked Corey.

He looked at Dr. Dyer (DD) as if he thought he was crazy and said –

“Juice, of course.”

DD: Do you think apple juice could come out of it?”

Corey: “No!” He laughed.

DD: “What about grapefruit juice?”

Corey: “No!”

DD: “What would come out of it?”

Corey: “Orange juice, of course.”

DD: “Why? Why when you squeeze an orange does orange juice come out?”

Corey may have been getting a little exasperated with Dr. Dyer at this point.

Corey answered “Well, it’s an orange and that’s what’s inside.”

Dr. Dyer nodded. “Let’s assume that this orange isn’t an orange, but it’s you. And someone squeezes you, puts pressure on you, says something derogatory that you don’t like. And it offends you. Out of you comes anger, hatred, bitterness, fear. Why?

Corey: “because that’s what’s inside.”

When Life Squeezes You

This be one of the great lessons of life. What comes out when life squeezes you? When someone hurts or offends you? If anger, doubt, fear, pain, and worry come out of you, it’s because that’s what’s inside. It doesn’t matter who does the squeezing—your mum, your brother, your children, your boss, or the government (tax time). If someone says something about you that you don’t like, what comes out of you is what’s inside. And what’s inside is up to you. It’s your choice.

The Bottom Line

Dr. Dyer adds: “When someone puts the pressure on you and out of you comes anything other than love, it’s because that’s what you’ve allowed to be inside.

Once you take away all those negative things you don’t want in your life – doubt, fear, worry, negativity, and limiting beliefs, etc., and replace them with love, kindness, an attitude of gratitude and trust, you’ll find yourself living a highly functioning life in the full. If you pack yourself with the best attributes, the best attribute will preside. Bring on the squeeze!
